The Governing Council is the highest decision-making body of British American University. It sets the University’s mission and strategic direction, safeguards its academic standards and financial health, and ensures that BAU is managed responsibly in the interests of students and society.
Council members bring experience from higher education, business, law, healthcare and public service, and serve on a voluntary basis.

Secretary to the Council
Approves the University's mission, strategic plan and key performance indicators.
Approves budgets, monitors financial performance and safeguards University assets.
Ensures robust arrangements for academic standards and the student experience.
Ensures the University meets its legal, regulatory and ethical obligations.
Appoints the President and oversees senior leadership performance.
Represents the interests of students, staff, partners and the community.
Acts on behalf of the Council between meetings and prepares the Council’s agenda and priorities.
Oversees academic policy, program approval and quality assurance processes.
Reviews budgets, financial statements, internal controls and external audit reports.
Reviews governance arrangements and recommends new Council members.
Monitors student welfare, services and the overall student experience.
