BAU Admission
Methods of Application

Application Form is obtainable by post or personally from the Office of the Registrar, British American University or any other designated offices worldwide. It may also be downloaded or completed online from the BAU website www.bau-edu.us. The processing fee as indicated on the Admission form is US$50.00 payable by direct remittance into the University’ Bank Accounts. Completed forms with credentials should be returned to the Registrar, British American University, Administrative Complex, Fola Adeoti Strre, Itele-Awori, Ogun State, Nigeria. Application forms of those who do not meet the Minimum Entry Requirements for programs of their choices may be considered for other programs at the discretion of the Registrar whose decision is final. Each Admission form should be acompanied by the following documents:

  • Certified True Copies of all Certificates (Academic and/or Professional).
  • Certified True Copies of Birth Certificate or Sworn Declaration of Age,
  • In case of Postgraduate Admission, original copies of all academic Transcripts,
  • Proof of Sponsorship in the forms of letter from a sponsor, in the case of self-sponsored candidates, a letter of guarantee from employer or any other document to show the candidates financial ability to cope with the financial needs while on the program,
  • Attestation/Recommendation Letter from a notable person such as a Clergyman, Imam, employer or the Principal of the candidates’ former School/University.
  • A Letter of Understanding by the candidate to be of good conduct while on the BAU Program,
  • Identity Documents such as International Passport, National Identity Card or a letter of identity from the candidate’s local Government of Origin,
  • A copy of recently taken Passport Photograph of the Candidate, and
  • Any other document which in the opinion of the candidate would enhance his/her chance of being admitted.

After the receipt of the Admission form with all relevant accompanying documents, the Admission Officer will review the entire package. If at any stage the attention of the candidate is required, a document is missing, the Admission Officer needs some more clarification especially in the case of postgraduate admission, the candidate will be contacted either by phone or by e-mail. A postgraduate may be invited to come and make oral presentation particularly in case of PhD applicants. Otherwise, if the Admission Officer is satisfied after the review of the package, the candidate will be admitted and the Admission/Acceptance Letter will be issued.

Mode of Study

Candidates may register as Full-Time, Part-Time or Study-Away students. However, a study-away status may be granted ONLY if:

  • There is a supervisor with specialization relevant to the candidate’s course of study at the candidate’s place of work or residence in addition to the University-based supervisor appointed by BAU for the candidate,
  • The candidate indicates in writing his willingness to study under the supervision of the home-based supervisor, and
  • The candidate would be able to visit the University Campus at least two times for a master degree and four times for a Doctoral Degree before the completion of the program for the purpose of examinations, seminar or project defense as may be appropriate.

In all cases, students under the same program shall be subjected to the same academic and professional workloads irrespective of their modes of studies

Transfer of Credit

All applicants are required to send evidence of prior education and/or training. Upon the receipt of supporting documents, the Admissions Officers in coordination with the related faculty staff will perform credentialing analysis and evaluation for eligibility and possible credit transfer. Successful candidates will receive an acceptance letter along with a study plan and an enrollment agreement within three business days from the date of supporting documents receipt.

Acceptance

BAU will develops a Personalized Study Plan for each applicant based on major, minor field of study and the transferred credit from previously attended study or training. If the applicant has a specific interest in a subject that is not listed in his/her suggested study plan, it is possible to coordinate with Admissions Officer regarding the required change after specification of selected subject code(s) from Degree Programs listing and the code of the replaced subject. An updated study plan will then be sent back to the student after the approval and subject replacement process.

Enrollment Agreement

An Enrollment Agreement includes degree details, fees, payment options, refund policy and a method of payment issued to each prospective student after acceptance for his/her careful review and signature. The student will retain a copy, and return the signed originals of the Enrollment Agreement and Study Plan along with the payment evidence to the University.

Student's Right to Cancel the Enrollment Agreement

A student has the right to cancel the Enrollment Agreement and obtain a refund of charges paid through non-attendance at the first class session or the seventh day after enrollment, whichever is later.

Refund Policy

Student must submit a written, signed and dated notice of cancellation  and refund to the Registrar in order to qualify for cancellation of the enrollment agreement and to a refund of excess paid value. The cancellation effective date is the date of notice submission. If the student has received federal student financial aid funds, the student is entitled to a refund of moneys not paid from the federal students financial aid program funds. Students who withdraw from the program before enrollment or wthin the first 7 days after enrollment will receive a 100% refund of any paid tuition and fees. If student withdraws after the first class session or after 7 business days from enrollment date, a prorated refund shall not be less than the total amount owed by the student for the portion of the educational program provided subtracted from the amount paid by the student, calculated as follows: The amount owed equals the daily charge for the program (total institutional charge, divided by the number of days or hours in the program), multiplied by the number of days student attended, or was scheduled to attend, prior to withdrawal.

All refundable amounts paid by the student in excess of what is owed as calculated above shall be refunded. Except as provided herein, all amounts that the student has paid shall be subject to refund unless the enrollment agreement and the refund policy outlined in the catalog specify amounts paid for an application fee or deposit not more than $250.00, books, supplies, or equipment, and specify whether and under what circumstances those amounts are non-refundable. In addition to BAU’s commitment to apply low cost tuition which is usually about 30% of what regularly applied at most of the for-profit postsecondary educational facilities, BAU develops customized financial-aid packages based on student’s level of financial need, and the availability of allocated funds.

Every student package may include any or a combination of the following major financial aid programs including Gift aid that does not require repayment and is divided into three categories which are Grants that recognize financial need, Scholarship in recognition of academic merit and Awards, Loans, that must be repaid to lender (usually after graduation) and can come from private lenders and university sources when allocated funds are available, and Work-study allows students to earn money for University expenses while gaining valuable skills – often in their intended field. All accepted students are eligible for interest free payment plans without any banking process or credit reviews, 10% immediate discount if tuition is paid in full, and 5% if paid in full within three months from enrollment date and 10% special discount if student is a first relative of a BAU current or graduated student. Textbook recycling program manages used textbooks’ collection and redistribution free of charge. This service helps a wide range of students who may face a financial strains purchasing educational materials. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The British American University operates a flexible admission policy. Consequently, the entry requirements for admission into the BAU Bachelor’s Degree programs are as follows:

  • Standard Admission (Enrolled Student shall be required to successfully take 170 semester units in four(4) years or less): Candidates must possess an American High School Diploma or an equivalent qualification such as 5 Ordinary Level GCE papers at one sitting or 6 Ordinary Level papers at two(2) sittings of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO), Nigeria, National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB), Nigeria, or similar recognized examinations body worldwide.
  • Direct Admission into the 2nd Year of the Bachelor’s degree program ((Enrolled Student shall be required to successfully take 120 semester units in three(3) years or less while transfering 50 credits from their previous Studies ): Candidate must be one of the following:
    i. Holders of the School Certificate/GCE Ordinary Level and the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in two(2) subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with passes at subsidiary or credit level in three other subjects obtained at not more than two sittings;
    ii. Holders of the School Certificate/GCE Ordinary Level and the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in three(3) subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with a pass in one other subject at subsidiary or credit level obtained at not more than two sittings;
    (iii) Holders of the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in four subjects at Principal Level; or
    (iv) Holders of the School Certificate or its equivalent with at least four credit level passes and a pass in English Language plus a recognized 2-year Diploma from a University, Research Instituion or any other Institution of Higher Learning/professional body.
  • Admission with transfer of 94 semester units (Enrolled Student shall be required to successfully take 76 semester units in 2 years): In addition to the above, candidates must possess any of the following qualifications: (a) Postsecondary Diploma of the British American University, USA, International College of Management and Technology, Nigeria or their equivalent qualifications such as National Diploma (ND), NCE, 2-year Diploma from any other recognized/government approved University with a grade not below Lower Credit or recognized Associate Degrees. (b) Diploma of a recognized Professional Institute including but not limited to Chartered Institute of Administration (CIA), ICAN ATS Certificate and their equivalent qualifications such as Diploma in Journalism, Public Relations, BEEC, etc, and Passes at the Intermediate Professional Examinations of recognized Professional Institutes such as the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Diploma Certificate of the Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management (NIPSM), Institute of Transport, etc.
  • Admission with transfer of 60 semester units (Enrolled Student shall be required to successfully complete 110 semester units in three academic years or less): This category of admission is only applicable to holders of degrees obtained after completion of less than 100 post secondary semester units or less than 60 semester units after National Diploma or equivalent including Higher Diploma (HD) from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning, Higher National Diploma (HND) from a Polytechnic or Final Professional Certificates of recognized Institutes such as Chartered Institute of Administration, Charted Institute of hartered Institute of Personnel Management, Charted Institute of Insurance, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Bankers, and the Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management, etc. (For enquiries as to whther your own professional body is recognized or otherwise, contact the Registrar’s Office)
  • Admission with transfer of 122 semester units (Enrolled Student shall be required to successfully complete 48 semester units in an academic year): This category of admission is applicable to holders of relevant Higher Diploma (HD) of the British American University, Florida, USA, International College of Management and Technology, Nigeria or equivalent qualifications
  • Admission with per-subject credit transfer: This category of admission is applicable to applicants who had completed certain undergraduate programs that does not lead to a degree or partially attended but not graduated from recognized undergraduate degree program provided that: (a) Subject’s GPA is not less than 2 of 4 or 2.5 of 5, (b) maximum transferred credits shall not exceed 60 semester units towards graduation with a bachelor’s degree from the British American University, and (c) no student shall be absorbed into the final class of any program.
BAU Post Graduate Programs

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The entry requirements for admission into BAU Postgraduate School are as follows:
Postgraduate Diploma: Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, HND, Higher Diploma or equivalent Professional Qualifications.
Master’ Degree Programs: Applicants must possess a good Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Lectureroom Honors (Lower Division) from the BAU or other recognized Universities. However, Final Professional Certificates of relevant Chartered Professional Bodies such as ACIA, ACA, ACCA, ACIMA, ACIS, ACIB, CIPM, IDPM (London) ACPA (London) as well as HND with Upper Credit, Postgraduate Diploma from recognized Universitites are also acceptable for the Master’s degree Programs. In all cases, at least two years post qualification cognate experience is required.

Doctoral Degrees (by Course Work and Thesis): Applicants must possess a good Master’s Degree with average score of 60% or better (or equivalent of 1.00 on a 4.00 GPA scale) in addition to a good Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline from the BAU or any other recognized University.

Doctoral Degrees (by Publications): Candidates for the Degree of PhD by Publications must be members or past members of staff/alumni of a recognized University or research Institution. In order to be eligible for consideration, alumni must be graduates of at least five years’ standing and have already obtained a Masters Degree. However, in exceptional circumstances, other candidates may also be considered. Applications may be made at any time and such applications should be accompanied by:

  • A list of the publications to be submitted; these may include refereed articles, a
  • uthored chapters, authored books, and edited works. They should not internally published materials or unpublished seminar/conference papers,
  • A supporting paper; This should summarize each publication submitted, outline their interrelationships, give a critical review of the current state of knowledge and research in the applicant’s field and indicate how his or her work has contributed to the field. It should also comment on the standing of any journals and the reception of the publications as indicated by citations and reviews.
Criteria for the Award of the Doctoral Degree of PhD by Publication

To be awarded a Degree of PhD by Publication of BAU, a candidate must show that his or her work makes a significant contribution to knowledge in a particular field. The publications must also provide evidence of the capacity of the candidate to pursue further research, representing a coherent contribution to research in a given field and demonstrating a depth of scholarship and originality comparable with that required in a PhD thesis. The materials submitted shall be sufficiently extensive as to provide convincing evidence that the research constitutes a substantial contribution to knowledge or scholarship, and at Registration, the candidate shall submit for examination:

  • Three copies, in published form, of each items forming part of the work on which the applications for the Degree by Publication is based. Permission to include work in manuscript, but which has been accepted for publications, may be granted upon a request by the applicant,
  • Four copies of the supporting papers referred to above, modified, if necessary after consultation with the adviser. A full bibliography of all the work ever published by the candidate must be included as an appendix,
  • A statement as to what part (if any) of the materials have been submitted for a Degree or other qualifications at BAU or any other university or institution, explaining the reason for its inclusion, and
  • If joint work is submitted, what part of it is the candidate’s contribution.

In all cases, possession of a good Master’s Degree from a recognized University is mandatory.

Doctoral Degrees (by Research): This option is available to advanced academic staff in the Universities or other research institutions. The basic entry requirements are as follows:

  • A good Bachelor Degree with a minimum of Second Lectureroom Honors (Upper Division),
  • A Master Degree in relevant disciplines with average score of 60% or better (or equivalent of 1.00 on a 4.00 GPA scale)
  • Must be working in a University or a research institution as a lecturer, instructor or researcher
  • A minimum of 10 years work experience is mandatory,
  • A minimum of 10 academic and/or professional publications in relevant disciplines in the mixture of journal articles, textbooks, contributions to books, edited books, monographs, etc. is mandatory.
  • Possession of Final Professional Certificate of recognized Chartered Professional Institute will be an added advantage.

Having met the above conditions, the applicant ONLY needs to write the Thesis/Dissertation on an Approved Topic relevant to his area of specialization to fulfill the requirements for the award of the Doctoral Degree. Applicants holding Master’s Degrees with average score less than 60% (or GPA of 1.00 out of a 4.00 scale) who wish to enroll for the PhD may be considered for M. Phil./PhD alternative. However, irrespective of the submission by the Applicants, the decision of the BAU is final on admission, which is also dependent on availability of space. NOTE: If a candidate of PhD by Research wishes to specialize in any area of study, he/she should write his thesis in that area.

English Language Requirements

If English isn’t your first language, studying at the British American University, USA, can be very challenging. You can also meet your language requirements by successfully completing our Pre-sessional English course. We accept a range of English language qualifications. You’ll need to achieve the required grade in one of our accepted English language tests, such as, Test of English as a Foreighn Language (TOEFL) and  International English Language Test System (IELTS).

The alternative English language tests accepted by the British American University are as follows :

  • British American University Certificate of Proficiency in English with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University Certificate of Advanced English with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University Certificate of Business and Industrial English with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University Entrance Test in English for Speakers of other Languages with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University International School Board Certificate of Attainment in English with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University Language Center Professional English Language Certificate with overall average of 60% or better,
  • British American University Language Center English for Special Purposes Certificate with overall average of 60% or better,
  • Ordinary Level General Certificate of Education (O/L GCE) or Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) issued by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NEC) in Nigeria or Cambrige University, UK, with a grade not below Credit (C) OR
  • Ordinary Level General Certificate of Education (O/L GCE) or Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) issued by the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) in Nigeria with Credit (C) or better,
